December 10, 2009

For many, many months, a sign hung outside 3519 Butler St., in Lawrenceville, promising an Asian-Latin fusion restaurant. Such an exotic combination fired diners' imaginations, but as the sign fluttered forlornly through several seasons, hopes dimmed. Then suddenly, like the long-dormant bulb bursting into flower, there it was: Tamari!

Spirits: The lo-do on the Round Corner
November 12, 2009
Pittsburgh has been the beneficiary of the national housing implosion in some less obvious ways. If, for example, the real estate market hadn't collapsed across the Sun Belt and West Coast, Derek Burnell might never have taken a flier on Pittsburgh, never moved to Lawrenceville with his Carnegie-born wife, and never walked into the corner bar that would eventually become his, the Round Corner Cantina, a place specializing in scratch margaritas and Mexican street food.

Your Inner Vagabond coffeehouse reborn as flavorful Istanbul restaurant
October 28, 2009
Your Inner Vagabond has been a unique venue for Lawrenceville since it opened at Butler and 42nd Street almost two years ago. The Middle Eastern coffee and tea creations and globe-spanning cuisine have been only part of the appeal; the BYOB "coffeehouse and world lounge" has also maintained an ever-changing roster of community and arts events, from bellydancing performances to board game gatherings to late-night concerts.

Munch goes to J'eet
October 22, 2009
Everything about the place is so elegantly simple. The tables are made of bamboo, both hard and ecologically friendly; the colors are bright and the huge front window makes it so bright. There's no alcohol, so that eliminates that whole side of the restaurant business. And the menu, both in design and content, is really fresh.

Round Corner Cantina
October 8, 2009
Some of us fondly remember the dingy, homey (and homely) Sufak's Round Corner, at the corner of 37th and Butler streets in Lawrenceville, as a place where the drinks were always painfully cheap and never left empty long.
So, the bar's new iteration as part of the glamorous Lower Lawrenceville (a.k.a. LoLa) is a tiny bit jarring. But only a tiny bit.

Laughingstock: humor, art and craft combine at Lawrenceville's new Luke & Eloy Gallery
December 10, 2008
Ever since Marcel Duchamp submitted a urinal to an art exhibition in 1917, calling it Fountain and signing it R. Mutt, silliness and sarcasm have found their way into the world of contemporary art. From the subtly devious side of surrealist painter Magritte and the biting wordsmithery of playwright Oscar Wilde to the playful juxtaposition of objects in Robert Rauschenberg’s assemblages and the ribald satire of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, humor has always been part of the game of creating and presenting modern art.

New club the New Amsterdam opens in Lawrenceville
November 20, 2008
Walking down Butler Street toward 45th, on the way to check out the new club that's opened in the former A.J.'s Tavern, I told my friend, "The only thing is, it's one of those places where you can't see into the bar before you go in, so you have no idea if you want to be there until it's too late." But it seems the folks who opened the New Amsterdam's doors a few weeks ago felt the same way: A section of the glass-brick façade has been replaced with a large, transparent glass garage door facing the street. And what we saw from the sidewalk proved welcoming enough to draw us in.

Dresses (and shoes, and accessories) for Success
September 11, 2008
The words "Pittsburgh's fashion industry" could sound oxymoronic at first blush, and the contingent here at Pool is small: a pair of bricks-and-mortar boutiques that are making Lawrenceville a serious style destination; a massive online empire that began in the house of a Carnegie Mellon grad with a passion for vintage; and a designer whose dresses and separates are found all over the country. Being part of the Pittsburgh scene creates particular business challenges, they admit, but it also provides unique advantages.

Safe at home: Preserving the Clemente legacy.
April 5, 2008
I'm standing with Duane Rieder, the local keeper of Roberto Clemente's flame, in the spot where Lou Gehrig once slept.
We're in the old Pittsburgh Engine House No. 25, at 3339 Penn Ave., in Lawrenceville. Rieder, a professional photographer, uses this building as his studio, and he's now converted it into the Roberto Clemente Museum (with the blessing of Clemente's widow, Vera). But the building had ties to baseball history long before Rieder bought it. The Oct. 5, 1927, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that while Gehrig was in town for the World Series, the Iron Horse sneaked off to Engine House No. 25 "while the rest of the Yankees hobnob[bed] with the rich of Pittsburgh." It's fitting that the building itself bridges two players who were so great and whose deaths were so tragic. (Clemente died in a plane crash while trying to help earthquake victims; Gehrig, of course, died from the nervous-system disease that bears his name today.)

February 21, 2008

Owner and Chef Geno Giguere grew up in Maine, but he came to Pittsburgh during the summer of 1997, met Lisa (now his wife), and never left. Geno's may be a new restaurant -- it opened less than a year ago -- but it feels like it has been in Lawrenceville for a generation already. Lisa provides that Pittsburgh connection -- she's had family living in the neighborhood for almost 100 years.

Lawrenceville glass artist pieces together a legacy
June 13, 2007
When artist Catherine Berard finally could afford to renovate the front of her stained-glass studio in Lawrenceville, she saw it as a chance to create a colorful calling card for her growing business.
Using randomly shaped shards of colored glass left over from stained-glass restorations and commissioned pieces she has done, Berard has produced a nature mosaic that covers the front of her Butler Street building with an explosion of color.
"I really wanted something with some 'wow' factor and thought, what better way to say this is what we do here than to do the front of the studio with stained glass," said Berard, 53, a Brighton Heights native who studied art at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Munch goes to Remedy
May 17, 2007
As in a funky dive bar down Larryville way, that formerly answered to the name of Ray's Marlin Beach Bar. Gone are the loud colors and the South Beach theme and art deco decor. What remains is a darker dive bar that's a little bit hipster, a little bit hip-hop, and equal parts blue & white collar, reflecting the diverse nature of the neighborhood.
Munch has used this term before and Remedy fits the definition well of a "gastropub" -- that is to say a bar with a menu of more than just wings and burgers (though those are available too).
Remedy features a number of entrees, including Pasta Penne with Chicken, Saffron and Shittake mushrooms, a Cardomom Crusted Pork Chop and Poached Atlantic Salmon ($14-16) as well as vegetarian items -- a Portobello burger, Southwestern Black Bean Burger and BBQ Tofu wrap ($6.50-8), plus classic sandwiches: Hot Sausage, Rueben, Meatloaf and Fried Fish ($5.50-9.50).

A series of grass roots organiztions, not-for-profits, and commercial and private companies have created an atmosphere that many are calling "post-industrial chic." The 16:62 Design Zone, Society for Contemporary Craft, and Gerald's Forge are mentioned.

Survey of library branches facing ax finds plenty of activity
October 28, 2009

Building many libraries to serve city neighborhoods was always part of Andrew Carnegie's philanthropic plan. Eight years before the main library that bears his name opened in Oakland, he offered $1 million to the City of Pittsburgh for a system that included branches. Now that system is threatened by declining government revenue and rising costs. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh plans to close four of its 19 branches by February, three of them in neighborhoods where the first ones opened by 1900 -- Lawrenceville, Hazelwood and the West End.

Eulogy for Jay Bernard by his nephew, Ben Rossi
May 24, 2007
Lawrenceville is mourning the loss of Jay Bernard, owner of Jay Design, designer, resident, and dedicated member of the Lawrenceville community, who died on May 17, 2007.
Jay was known and loved throughout Lawrenceville for his strong sense of community spirit, his passion for design, his love for animals, and his warm and generous nature. He played a large role in starting such well-known community events as Art All Night, the House Tour, and the Boys of Lawrenceville’s gourmet spaghetti dinner, and the Joy of Cookies Tour. He will be greatly missed by us all.
His Eulogy, delivered at his funeral service by his nephew Ben Rossi, follows.
So I’ve been having this image of Jay. It starts out with Jay at the Pearly Gates. He is negotiating with St. Peter: “Okay,” he says, “the skunk and the rooster go, but I will not budge on the five dogs, the cat, the rabbit, the lizard, the snake, the spider, the hamster, and the pheasant.” Peter rolls his eyes, checks Jay’s name off of the list, and welcomes him to Heaven. As he makes his way through the crowds he runs in to St. Francis. And while Jay expresses his admiration for Francis’ life of service and charity, he can’t resist pointing out that the brown robe Francis is wearing is so 5 years ago! Maybe he could try something in black or even taupe. And those old leather sandals would be nicely replaced with a pair of crocks. Just a suggestion! A few hours later, he is with Mary. He’s got his easel out, sketching her beautiful face. Jay is telling her about this new product he wants to launch: Immaculate Conception Body Wash…Washing away sin for 2,000 years! After waiting in line for what seemed to be an eternity, he finally arrives at the heavenly throne surrounded by angels in triumphant glory. Jay of course is taken aback by the magnificence of this scene and does homage. When he rises, he has only one thing to say, “Lord, I think that if we replaced the unleavened wafer with a nice Italian flatbread, perhaps a good ciabatta, and substituted a dry white for the sacramental wine, we could really boost Mass attendance. What do you think?” He shakes his head…. The Lord knows Jay too well.
