November 3, 2006 - After graduating from the University of South Florida with a degree in Political Science and International Studies, Shea Mullen took a completely different path from most college graduates, and opened a high end fashion boutique, Double A, with her brother. While at a trade show searching for vintage t-shirts to sell at Double A without much success, they decided if they couldn’t find what they were looking for, they would just make them on their own! So, after designing some t-shirts, they traveled to another trade show, only this time to sell their t-shirts. American Eagle noticed one of their designs, and from that point on, many good things continued to happen. In addition to their new found fame with American Eagle, Shea decided she want to create a fresh look for golf apparel, so in 1996, she started Pennant, a golf apparel line. Her items were so high in demand and she couldn’t manufacture and fill all the orders that were being made for her apparel. She knew some changes had to be made. In 2001, Good Chemistry, a marketing and design firm that focuses on t-shirt and handbag design, was created. The name refers to the type of relationship Shea hopes to have with her co-workers and clients. After working out of her home and brothers art school for a while, she chose to move her studio to Lawrenceville. She had heard so many good things about Lawrenceville from her friend, Jaime Rivers, who owns Sugar boutique in the area. She really liked the atmosphere and the aura of what was going on in Lawrenceville, so in September 2005, she moved to Plummer Street and opened a studio with her team members, Phil Seth and Jack Zelen. She has loved every minute of it and plans on staying for a long time. Besides designing t-shirts for brands like Delia’s and Rue, Good Chemistry also creates some of their own lines. The Give and Take line is one of their most recent projects. This line of vintage t-shirts is being designed after old charity logos. The charities being featured are The Special Olympics, The American Cancer Society, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, and The Boys & Girls Club. Shea chose charities that meant something to her and her family. The t-shirts will have a vintage, thrift store feel and will be launched at Barney’s in New York. A portion of the proceeds will go to the charities. When asked what was different and unique about their t-shirts, Shea and Phil Seth, one of Good Chemistry’s team members, both felt that the research and effort that goes into making each piece authentic is what makes their work special. The creation process for each shirt, no matter how simple the design, is what they are most proud of. As if Shea is not busy enough, she is opening a cupcake store in Shadyside around Thanksgiving. She discovered the idea while traveling for Good Chemistry. She often came across cupcake shops that were packed full of people and found she was drawn to them. She knew she wanted to open one herself. Shea and her partners came up with all the logos and interior design for Coco and are very excited for the opening. Whether it’s t-shirts, handbags, or cupcakes, the passion and excitement of Good Chemistry was felt all around the studio. It is so refreshing to find someone so passionate about what they do. Good Chemistry is definitely living up to their name!
